The GPFS sponsored Flute Academy in Salem is an annual event that brings together local students and teachers for a day of performing, workshops, recitals, and a masterclass with Martha Long from our own Oregon Symphony! Due to Covid restrictions we are not able to use our traditional venue at Chemeketa Community College and the academy will held virtually via zoom.

The Flute Academy – when covid restrictions are not in play - is aimed specifically at mid-valley high school students preparing for the upcoming solo and ensemble competition/adjudication. The one-day event gives students a chance to perform, receive feedback from a professional flutist, learn a new skill in the workshops, network with peers, enjoy lunch together, and play in Flute Academy Flute Ensemble.  Flute Academy is open to all interested flutists and you are invited to attend and learn!

 Martha Long, of the Oregon Symphony, continues to offer her time and expertise at this annual (now virtual!) event in 2022.  Martha's warm and welcoming teaching style is perfect for students of all ages, as well as adult amateurs and professional players.

Dr. Sydney Carlson, professor of flute at PSU and member of the Portland Opera Orchestra, provides a warm up for the day with her best advice on getting ready to perform

Debra Huddleston, pianist, coach, Salem Master chorus, and music director at Woodburn Presbyterian Church, will accompany masterclass performers.
