A LITTLE ABOUT THE WORKSHOP PRIOR TO MASTERCLASS:
A Method Called Love: In this interactive workshop, Wissam delves into the source that activates our deepest potential as human beings and flute players, setting out simple principles and processes that unleash our creativity, unique voices and consistency. Wissam will define how to establish a flexible, nuanced, experimental way of working that is fun and embraces risk-taking, moving beyond the anxieties and fears that hold us back in life and music. He will bring a special focus on improvisation and memory as tools to open the door to a natural and deeply personal bond with our instrument

From Volunteer Elyse Nah, Her Conversation with Wissam - Lebanese-British flutist, conductor, and composer Wissam Boustany will join the Greater Portland Flute Society as guest artist this October. A charismatic musician known for blending innovation with tradition, Wissam brings incredible tone color, texture, and expression to his performances and compositions.
When I spoke with Wissam this August, I was struck by his passion and sincere heart for people. He welcomes musicians and nonmusicians alike to experience Inner Journeys, his way of recital that breaks barriers between performer and audience through interactive dialogue. He also invites all who are interested to a workshop and masterclass on The Method Called Love, his teaching approach that focuses on our capacity to love as a powerful and practical state to unlock potential and joy in any aspect of our lives. His emphasis on improvisation and memory helps students better understand fear and anxiety, learning to work with these emotions in empowering ways.
Wissam is also committed to humanitarian work and understands more than most the difficulty of community without politicization. When asked what he hopes to share with Portland, he answered that music “allows us to reflect on our common humanity, in all its forms, and helps us find the motivation to create a warmer world.” Come join him for a joyful space of listening and learning!
