- Registration Now Open - Flute Academy Website Link: Scheduled for 2/12/22, online. Martha Long, principle flutist with the Oregon Symphony will perform as well as conduct a masterclass. There will be a workshop on "Warming Up" presented by Sydney Carlson, professor of music at PSU. Please tell your band directors and pass the word to flute teachers you know. While this event is focused on youth and local teachers, it is also interesting for anyone to listen in on the event to enjoy the performance and learn more about the pieces featured in the masterclass session.
- Save the Date - Flute Fair Website Link: Friday evening 4/9/22 online recital by guest artist Gareth McLearnon and daytime Saturday 4/10/22 two online workshops and a masterclass by Gareth, and a closing concert by GPFS Members. These two days will be followed by a new series of online workshops featuring GPFS members - details to follow. Gareth is a Haynes Artist.

This part focuses on awarenss of the myths of practicing and developing the "third hand" (mind) for practicing effectively and happily. Good reminders and great tips. This piece aligns nicely with this next article.
- Article Link - Mindfulness for Musicians, Reflections on a Workshop with Mihoko Watanabe: Very useful reflection on "mindfulness" as well as aspects of having a "growth mindset" for all levels of flutists. May be useful for teachers to make available to their more advanced high school students as well as college students. We thank Muramatsu flutes for sponsoring the fall event.

- Article Link - Donna Maebori: Donna is a lifetime Physical Therapist, flutist, and Feldenkrais certified practitioner. Upon retirement, she joined GPFS and is growing into viewing herself as more of a professional musician. She is a another example of the richness of talent, playing perspective and passion within the GPFS. Enjoy this brief exchange with her; she gives us some good insights based on her range of training and experience.

- Article Link - We Read December: A review of A Subversive History of Music (2021) by Ted Gioia, author of the famed History of Jazz. Even if you think you have had enough of music history or just don’t prefer to give it much thought, this book may still be for you. Highly recommend it for your 2022 reading list. It is the kind of book you can keep on your “reading table” and pick-up now and then.

- Growing Student Memberships in GPFS - For this membership year (2021-22), the GPFS board challenges itself and membership to sponsor 30 youth memberships - value $15 each. Donate a Student Membership by going to the "Donate" option on the website - Donate. You can also consider supporting the Student Study Grant Fund and other options.
- Link to Help Library: Consider donating to the current GPFS Lending Library campaign for modern music donations.
