Musician Wellness - There will be a bit of a performance anxiety and performance wellness theme running through the activities of the year and in The Portland Piper! Share your ideas for resources, books reviews, workshops and so on - newsletter@gpfs.org.

Webinar - At the turn of the new calendar year, there will be a half day online webinar focused on performance anxiety and wellness which will include a workshop providing information and strategies for managing anxiety, a panel presentation and participant discussion, and a refreshing workshop on the benefits of Alexander Technique and keeping those practices alive in our musical and regular life, including a review of constructive rest practice.

Can We Reach 12 New Donors? For this new GPFS program year 2022-2023, GPFS is hoping to reach 12 new donors, no matter how large a gift or small. Donations go either into the general account or are designated by you the donor to go to Student Study Grants, GPFS Youth Memberships or the Sara Lasky Memorial Masterclass fund.

A Resource for All, by Many – The NFA Performance Healthcare Committee Webpage & Work

Throw Back Article! Bass Flute Music - snowy egret, january messenger, a piece by Oregon composer Deena T. Grossman reviewed for this issue (see article below), works well on bass flute, alto or C flute. Flutist Amelia Lukas performed it on bass for a benefit concert premiering Wildfires and Waterways. Flutist Camila Oliveira recorded it for Deena's T. Grossman's most recent album release Becoming Durga.  <Read Article>

GPFS Member Camila Oliveira - Camila graduated from PSU, studying with Dr. Sydney Carlson. She is now pursuing a second masters in Montreal and will be presenting the June GPFS First Tuesday on the topic of Brazilian music for flute. <Read>

GPFS Member Sue Bonfeld - Sue is an adult amateur flutist with a lifelong love of the flute. She is also a new volunteer for GPFS - conceiving and developing the new Noteworthy column for The Portland Piper. <Read>

The Sunnyside Symphony Orchestra is having auditions for principal flute on Sunday, September 11th at 4pm at Sunnyside Seventh Day Adventist Church, 10501 SE Market St., Portland OR.  Contact the conductor, Travis Hatton at 503-781-4515.  Audition will consist of a prepared piece (5 minutes in length, containing slow and fast sections, as well as technical and expressive passages), and sight-reading.

Mihoko Watanabe Mindfulness for Musicians Opportunities - 

Reminder - GPFS 2021 Fall Guest Artist Dr. Mihoko Watanabe is now offering opportunities to participate in a range of "mindfulness events" for musicians. These range from free and weekly (30 min. session) to reasonably acceptable costs done periodically. Visit her website to learn more - Mihoko Watanabe Mindfulness for Musicians.

Introducing Noteworthy - This is a new column for The Portland Piper that was conceived and developed by GPFS member Sue Bonfeld. The column is a short list of curated videos, interviews, podcasts and performances of interest to musicians of all levels, but outside the scope of GPFS’s curated Flute Resources webpage.

A Literary Offering of Bach, Books and Banter -While they have reached the end of this season, their selections, focused on the music programmed for their performance season, can be found on their website.
