Student Study Grants - Applications due 1/1/23 (extended from 11/15/22). $300 grants for middle and high school students to study with GPFS teachers. Learn more: Student Study Grants First Tuesdays - REGISTRATION OPEN for December and January First Tuesdays with GPFS with Donna Maebori – flutist and Feldenkrais educator. More information coming. Watch here; Flute Academy, Salem Flute Fair guest artist will be Zart Dombourian-Eby, piccolo player with the Seattle Symphony. Save date: 4/23, a Sunday this year. Webinar - At the turn of the new calendar year, or during Flute Fair there will be a half day focused on performance anxiety and wellness which will include a workshop providing information and strategies for managing anxiety, a panel presentation and participant discussion, and a refreshing workshop on the benefits of Alexander Technique and keeping those practices alive in our musical and regular life, including a review of constructive rest practice. |

If you missed October's First Tuesdays with GPFS discussion between flutist Rose Bishop and Portland-based composer Lisa Neher, you can visit their websites to read about and listen to Rose play three of Lisa's compositions: Reach Out (C flute), Seal Mother (alto flute) and Night Song for Moths (piccolo). Websites - rosebishopflute.com; lisanehermusic.com The GPFS Fall Event, Speed-Duetting, was a romping success. Attended by 16 flutists, the consensus was to do it again and again! GPFS plans to do so!

Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission -GPFS is proud and grateful to have received a grant for $2400 from the Oregon Arts Commission. This award will help support the many activities for GPFS including, for example, Student Study Grants, masterclasses, workshops, performances, The Portland Piper publication, the annual fall event, Flute Academy, middle and high school competitions, and the annual Flute Fair.
Can We Reach 12 New Donors? For this new GPFS program year 2022-2023, GPFS is hoping to reach 12 new donors, no matter how large a gift or small. Donations go either into the general account or are designated by you the donor to go to Student Study Grants, GPFS Youth Memberships or the Sara Lasky Memorial Masterclass fund. Music Review – Seal Mother for Alto Flute by Portland-based Composer Lisa Neher (2021, 5 minutes, D.C. al Platypus Publishing Company) - This beautiful also flute solo calls upon the performer to create sea sounds, whisps and long lines of yearning, keeling - “Seal Mother envisions a selkie in her seal form, swimming not too far offshore, watching her children from a distance. Lyrical melodic lines express her love and longing for her children, while undulating motives evoke currents of water and grief. The embellishments are inspired by Irish whistle ornamentation such as cuts and taps. The piece ends with a reinvention of the Scotts ballad The Great Selkie, a tragic folksong about a Selkie father and his son who are killed by humans while in seal form.” |
A Must Listen! Imperial Topaz for contra-bass by Nicole Chamberlain – (3’55”) If I was pressed to choose one piece to listen to from Rose Bishop's new CD Diversions, I simply couldn’t do it. That said, this is a fascinating one because it is a substantive solo for a contra-bass. Invoking Imperial Topaz - “The color of the sun at sunset.” Nicole notes the piece “is intended to be performed on contrabass flute, but could easily be performed on any of the low flutes or even the C flute,” a fact which makes this engaging solo accessible to more players. It employs some simple modern techniques such as key clicks/punches, vocal and wind sounds. There are slow parts with elongated low notes as well as technically faster spots. Throw Back Article! Bass Flute Music - snowy egret, january messenger, a piece by Oregon composer Deena T. Grossman reviewed for this issue (see article below), works well on bass flute, alto or C flute. Flutist Amelia Lukas performed it on bass for a benefit concert premiering Wildfires and Waterways. Remembering Matt Doran, by GPFS Member Rebecca Olson, including an overview of his works for flute and the pieces we have of his in the GPFS Lending Library: Vancouver-based flutist and composer Matt Doran passed away in 2016, leaving his musician and flutist colleagues with engaging compositions and fond memories. The flute was his favorite instrument and he composed much for it. |
Music Review - Perennial for solo flute, by Joshua Mallard (2019, 4 minutes) Reviewed by GPFS Member BJ Nicoletti. Perennial, set as an Adagio, is a beautiful, somewhat plaintive and meditative composition. The piece, cyclical in character and form, feels and plays very organically, leaving lots of room for individual expression, as if one is coming home to an earlier experience and a new experience all at once. It was inspired by pieces he was especially attracted to as a young player.

Dr. Sophia Tegart, Associate Professor of Flute at Washington University and GPFS member, has released two albums this year. The Pan Pacific Ensemble, a standard wind quintet in which Tegart is a member, released its third album shortly after being named the 2022 winner of The American Prize in Professional Chamber Music. Their album “Ambiguous Traces” features newly commissioned works by Portland composer Kenji Bunch and Thai composer Narong Prangcharoen, as well as works by Austin Yip (Hong Kong), David Jarvis (Hawaii), and Chen Yi (UMKC). The album, released through Albany Records, can be found on all streaming sites, including Ambiguous Traces - Apple Music. Additionally, The Cherry Street Duo, Tegart’s duo with Dr. Krista Jobson (Associate Professor of Flute at University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley), released its debut album “Flute Duos by Women Composers.” This album features works by Shulamit Ran, Chen Yi, Claude Arrieu, Yuko Uebayashi, and Maria Szymanowska. The album was released through WSU Records and can be found on all streaming sites, including Cherry Street Duo Apple Music. Must Listen! Vermont Counterpoint with Oregon Symphony Flutists Martha and Zach – From Martha - "This performance is a little bit unusual because Zach and I recorded the backing track ourselves. When I've done this piece in the past, I've always used the Ransom Wilson recording that's available from Boosey and Hawkes. Ron Blessinger, executive director of 45th Parallel, asked us if we would be able to play Vermont Counterpoint live together, so we figured out how to divide up all 11 parts to make a new recording and present the version that you see here. Zach played all of the piccolo and alto flute parts, and I played all of the C flute parts. We're happy with how it turned out!" Learn more and listen here: <YouTube Recording>
Katie Frisco shares an online masterclass that I'm offering to support flutists during audition season during the month of January 2023. The course is designed to help flutists level up their playing, support their mindset, build community, and use auditions to meet artistic and personal goals. Each week the musicians will participate in an excerpt class led by one of our amazing faculty members, a mindset workshop to foster a nourishing, positive mindset around auditioning, and a mock audition where participants can run excerpt lists for the group. In addition, we'll have two bonus sessions: 1. Bonita Boyd will lead a conversation around trusting your artistic voice; 2. Symphony Storytime, Season Three - The OR Symphony starts their third season of Symphony Storytime. This is a great resource to know about. OR Symphony players accompany the reading of a children's books. A recent favorite is a reading of I Am Enough by Creative Chair Gabriel Kahane, accompanied by Artistic Partner Nathalie Joachim on flute.
